SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - In a stunning breach of official duty, two former Utah state court clerks have been arrested and hit with federal indictments. The duo is accused of using their positions to run an insider operation, helping multiple illegal immigrants evade lawful arrest and deportation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The federal indictment names Jennifer Joma, 27, and Lauren Kelsey Morrow, 26, both residents of Logan, Utah.
The Backdoor Escape Operation
The incident unfolded at the Logan City Municipal Justice Court. An ICE Enforcement and Removal Officer (ICE-ERO) arrived at the courthouse armed with an administrative warrant to arrest an undocumented individual scheduled for a hearing. To maintain order, the ICE officer stepped outside to wait in his vehicle, planning to execute the arrest safely once the target left the building.
However, federal prosecutors allege that as soon as Joma and Morrow realized ICE agents were on the premises, they swung into action to block the law enforcement action:
- Database Abuse: The clerks allegedly misused confidential court databases, scanning the entire day’s court docket to identify every non-U.S. citizen present.
- Intercepting Targets: Once they flagged the individuals, the clerks intercepted them before they could walk out the front doors.
- The Secret Escort: Joma and Morrow led ICE’s intended target, along with at least two other undocumented individuals, through secure employee-only hallways, sneaked them out a backdoor, and helped them escape undetected.
Caught on Camera Smirk and Obscene Gestures
What shocked investigators was the blatant defiance captured on the courthouse security system. Surveillance footage showed Joma and Morrow walking through the secure area after the first escape, smiling and waving directly at the camera. Morrow went as far as flashing her middle finger in an obscene gesture at the security lens.
The operation didn't stop there. On their second trip down the back hallways, Joma took it a step further by packing three of the individuals into her personal car and driving them away from the scene entirely before returning alone to finish her shift.
Federal Charges and "Operation Take Back America"
The law caught up with both women quickly. Joma and Morrow are now facing severe federal charges, including:
- Conspiracy to transport and harbor illegal aliens
- Harboring illegal aliens
- Obstruction of proceedings before federal agencies
Additionally, Joma faces independent charges for the actual transportation of undocumented individuals.
This high-profile crackdown is tied directly to Operation Take Back America, a major nationwide Justice Department initiative aimed at strictly enforcing federal immigration laws, dismantling cartels, and eliminating institutional corruption that compromises public safety.
