SAN FRANCISCO - Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has officially confirmed that Wilfredo Jose Tortolero-Arriechi, the prime suspect in a brutal stabbing at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is a Venezuelan national who entered the country illegally.
The Incident and the Victim
The fatal attack took place on December 4, inside the hospital premises. The victim, 51-year-old Alberto Rangel, fought for his life but tragically succumbed to his injuries two days later on December 6.
Before this fatal encounter, reports suggest that Tortolero-Arriechi had allegedly:
- Threatened his doctor.
- Intimidated multiple hospital staff members in the weeks leading up to the attack.
Entry into the United States
According to ICE Director Todd M. Lyons, Tortolero-Arriechi, 35, entered the U.S. illegally in 2023. Despite being encountered by U.S. Border Patrol agents at the time of his entry, he was released into the country under federal "catch-and-release" policies.
He eventually made his way to San Francisco—a city known for its "sanctuary" status—where he remained until the time of the crime.
"Tortolero-Arriechi illegally entered the U.S. in 2023, was let go under the Biden administration’s policies, and ended up in the sanctuary city," stated Director Lyons.
Legal Status and ICE Action
Tortolero-Arriechi is currently held at the San Francisco County Jail. Following the death of Alberto Rangel, he has been charged with:
- Homicide (Murder)
- Use of a deadly weapon
While he has pleaded not guilty to these charges, ICE lodged an immigration detainer against him on December 11. The agency is now calling on San Francisco authorities to honor this detainer and hand him over for deportation once his criminal proceedings and potential sentence are completed.
